Copper Pipe Thieves Strike Again: This Week’s Police Blotter

A breakdown of crime in the 88th precinct, which covers Fort Greene and Clinton Hill

The following arrest information was supplied by the New York Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Copper Pipes Stolen From Atlantic Yards

Five copper pipes, totaling $4,170 in value, were stolen from Atlantic Yards. The crime was committed at some time between Wednesday and Friday last week. The week prior, a construction site at 130 Flushing Ave. in Fort Greene was targeted—.

Teen Saved by Bystander

On Monday, Oct. 3 at around 4 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was walking with a friend on Lafayette Avenue and Rockwell Place when he noticed five other boys following him. Two of the teens in the group ran up to the boy and started punching him, throwing the boy to the ground. The suspects then tried to take the victim’s cell phone, but a bystander intervened and walked the boy home safely. Two thirteen-year-old boys were arrested for the crime on Friday.

A Supermarket Robbery

Associated Supermarket, located at 492 Myrtle Ave between Hall Street and Grand Avenue, was robbed on Monday, Oct. 24 at around 5 p.m. The suspect grabbed several unidentified items and tried to flee, pushing an employee to the ground in the process. A 40-year-old male was arrested directly after the crime’s occurrence.

Suspect Hits and Robs Woman

On Monday, Oct. 24 at 11 p.m., a woman was walking on Washington Avenue at Gates when a suspect approached, knocked the victim to the ground, and grabbed her iPhone 3. The suspect then fled in an unknown direction.

Teen Robbed in Train Station

At around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, a 15-year-old boy was walking inside the train station on Fulton Street and S. Portland Avenue. A suspect approached the boy from behind, grabbing the victim’s hood and pulling it down over his face. The suspect then punched the boy, grabbed his iPod, and fled the scene.

Chatty Suspect Robs Woman in G Train Station

On Tuesday, Oct. 25 at around noon, a man approached a woman outside the G train station on Lafayette and Washington avenues. He struck up a conversation with his soon to be victim, talking about his daughter’s property being stolen. The man then put his hand in his pocket, telling the victim he had a gun, and told the victim he would shoot her if she didn’t follow him downstairs into the train station. The suspect then took the victim’s cell phone, her necklace, a ring, and her earrings.

Delivery Man Robbed at Knifepoint

A man was making a delivery at a residence on Clinton Avenue between Fulton Street and Atlantic Avenue on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. when a suspect approached him from behind with a knife. The suspect told the victim to empty his pockets, which only contained the victim’s ID and social security card. The suspect then grabbed the victim’s red mountain bike and fled down Clinton Avenue.

Serial Shoplifter Arrested

Derrick Nelson, a 50-year-old male, was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at around 6 p.m. after attempting to shoplift some beer and food from the Pathmark at 625 Atlantic Ave. between S. Portland and Flatbush avenues. Nelson walked into the store at around 5 p.m. and attempted to leave without paying. When a security guard approached, Nelson became violent and punched the guard. The suspect has been arrested twice before at that same location for similar crimes.

Attempted Robbery at McDonald’s

On Wednesday, Oct. 26 at around 5:30 p.m., a man as inside McDonald’s at 395 Flatbush Avenue Ext. when two suspects approached him, removed his headphones from around his neck, and fled. The man caught up with the two suspects, and an officer stopped and arrested them, one 20 year old and one 16 year old.

Woman Punched And Robbed of iPhone

A woman was walking on Washington Avenue at Fulton Street on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at around 8 p.m. when an 18-year-old male approached her from behind and punched her in the neck. The victim dropped her iPhone 4S, which the man then picked and ran away with. The suspect was found and arrested the next day.

Teen Robbed by Friendly Suspect

Last Thursday at 4:30 pm, a 14-year-old boy was walking on St. Felix Street and Hanson Place when a suspect, who put his arm around the victim’s shoulder, approached him from behind. The suspect simulated having a gun in his pocket and said, “I don‘t want to hurt you. Give me your stuff.” The victim then handed over his wallet, containing his ID and some cash, as well as his cell phone.

Robbery at Gunpoint at Pratt Newsstand

Two suspects walked into Pratt Newsstand at 477 Myrtle Ave. between Hall Street and Washington Avenue on Thursday at around 10 p.m. The first suspect pulled out a silver handgun while the other went behind the store’s register and took $3,620 in cash.

Woman Chases iPhone Thief

On Friday at around 10 p.m. a woman was standing in front of a building on Washington Avenue between Greene and Lafayette avenues. A young male ran by and grabbed the victim’s iPhone 4 out of her hand. The woman chased the suspect, but he pushed her to the ground and fled.

Mystery Object Strikes Woman

On Sunday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., a woman was on Fleet Walk and Myrtle Avenue when she was struck in he head by an unknown object. The woman didn’t see whoever threw the object and was uninjured.

Another Mystery Object Strikes Man

In a separate report, a man walking on Fleet Walk and Myrtle Avenue on Sunday, Oct. 23 at around 7 p.m. also claimed to have been hit in the head by an unknown object, causing a cut to the left side of his head.

Two Men Injured in Grocery Store Assault

Three men got into a physical altercation on Sunday, Oct. 23 at around 11:30 pm at the grocery at 541 Myrtle Ave. between Steuben Street and Emerson Place. The suspect struck one victim with a metal rack, causing a cut to the victim’s hand. The suspect also punched a second victim and did over $250 worth of damages to the store. Irvin Berth, a 43-year-old male, was arrested two days later.

Computer Stolen from Home

A woman living on Ryerson Street between Myrtle and Park avenues went to sleep at around midnight on Monday, Oct. 24, leaving her $600 Acer Laptop next to a closed window. The woman woke up the next morning to find that the window had been opened and her laptop stolen.

Neighbor Witnesses Attempted Robbery

A woman left her home on Myrtle Avenue between Hall Street and Washington Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 22. She returned on Oct. 24, at which point her upstairs neighbor told her that he had seen someone attempt to break open her door while she was gone.

Bicycle Stolen in Hallway

On Monday, Oct. 24 at around 9:30 p.m., someone threw an object through the glass of the rear door of a building on Greene Avenue between Clifton Place and Lexington Avenue. The suspect then snatched a blue Schwinn bicycle from the building’s first floor hallway.

A Pizza Parlor Caper

On Monday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 p.m., an employee locked up  at 154 Adelphi St. in Fort Greene. He returned the next day at 10 a.m. and found that the lock had been broken off a side door. After investigating, the victim found that $600 had been stolen from inside a microwave in the basement, and $50 in change had been stolen from a tip jar.

Tire Shop Robbed

On Friday at 5:30 p.m., a man locked up his tire shop at 41 Cumberland St between Flushing Avenue and the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and left for the night. Upon his return at 10 a.m. the next day, the man realized that $4,140 worth in speakers was missing from a vehicle inside the shop.

Late Night Burglary at Chinese Restaurant

A man closed his Chinese restaurant at 169 Park Ave. between Carlton Avenue and Adelphi Street on Friday at 11:30 pm. He returned the newt day at 10 a.m. and found that a gate on a rear window had been broken and $3,600 had been stolen from a register.

Slick Thief Robs Woman on G Train

On Tuesday, Oct. 25 at around 10:30 a.m. a woman exited the G train station on Flatbush Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. After exiting, the woman found that her wallet, containing two credit cards, a debit card, and her driver’s license, was missing from her backpack. When the woman called to cancel her debit card, she found that $190 in unauthorized charges had been made to her account.

A Counterfeiting Caper

A patron of the Bank of America at 185 Hall St. between Willoughby Avenue and Myrtle Avenue went to his branch on Monday, Oct. 24 and discovered that someone had deposited counterfeit checks, totaling $1,900, into both his checking and savings accounts.

iPhone Snatched on St. Edwards Street

A woman was standing in front of a building on St. Edwards Street between Auburn Place and the Brooklyn Queens Expressway on Tuesday, Oct 25. At around 3:30 p.m., a man ran by, snatching her iPhone.

Bike Stolen at Atlantic Terminal

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, a man locked his $1,200 bicycle on a pole near Atlantic Terminal Mall. He locked the bike at around 2 p.m., but when he returned just two hours later, the man discovered his bike and the lock missing.

Con Man Arrested While Posing as Car Salesman

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, a woman appeared at the 88th precinct house, reporting that on July 7, a man approached her inside the Starbucks at Atlantic Terminal Mall, telling her he was a car salesman. The man offered to sell the woman a car, and over the course of a month, the woman gave the man a total of $3,000, but never received the car or her money back. 38-year-old Michael McGriff was arrested for the crime.

Man Robbed of $8,300 While Abroad

On Thursday, a man came to the 88th precinct house and reported that while he was out of the country between October 2010 and January 2011 someone withdrew a total of $8,300 from his bank account.

Car Robbed of GPS and Radio

On Friday at around 5:30 p.m., a man parked his car on Grand Avenue between Lexington and Greene avenues. When the man returned to his car, he realized that both his GPS system and his car radio, worth $2,300 in total, were missing from his vehicle. Security cameras may be able to help police find the culprits.

A Roommate’s Scorn

On Saturday, a man living on Clinton Avenue between Gates Avenue and Fulton Street realized that his Sony TV, a white watch, and his Sony DVD player, totaling $3,650, were missing from his apartment. The man called his former roommate, who had just moved out, and inquired about the missing items. The roommate replied through text message saying, “You give me my things and I‘ll give you yours.”

iPhone Snatched on Washington Avenue

On Sunday at 5:30 p.m., a woman was walking on Washington Avenue between Willoughby and Myrtle avenues. The woman was talking on her iPhone 3G when an unknown male snatched the phone from her hand and fled.

Purse Snatching at Burlington Coat Factory

On Sunday at 7:30 p.m., a woman was shopping inside the Burlington Coat Factory at Atlantic Terminal Mall and placed her bag on a hanger while trying on a coat. An unknown suspect took the bag, which contained the woman’s credit card, an ATM card, and her learner’s permit. The woman later found her bag on the floor of the department store, but its contents were missing.
