ViewFinder: High-rises of Fort Greene

Here's a photo gallery of the buildings that are home to residents who are beginning to flex their political muscle.

As we reported last week, a new constituency living in the new high-rise towers looming over the neighborhood along Flatbush Avenue is beginning to make its presence known politically. As many as 15,000 residents live in the nine buildings that will be represented in the new committee that will meet with local politicians at the end of this month. Click through the slideshow to see a photo gallery of the buildings that form the new movement.

ViewFinder: Juggle Fest at Pratt!

Our shutterbug snapped pics of jugglers showing off their elaborate routines on Saturday.

Jugglers from as far as away as Switzerland showed off their fanciest routines at the Pratt Institute last week in the "Juggle This!" festival. A variety of acts thrilled audiences with elaborate displays involving unicycles, volleyballs, glowing hoops and, of course, the classic bowling pins. Click through the gallery to see some photos from the show.

View Finder: Behind the Scenes at Kelso Brewery

Our photographer paid a visit to the local brewery in Clinton Hill and came back with some great shots.

On a quiet stretch of Waverly Avenue, Kelly Taylor and his cohorts brew up the delicious Kelso beers that are then distributed all over the city. Taylor says that he strives to make complex beers that are not so strong that you’re in outer space after one glass. But that doesn’t mean the brewery won’t crank out a strong one every once in a while, as it did when it made the Recessionator in 2009, a powerful beer meant to chase away those recession blues. Kelso beer is on tap at several spots around the neighborhood, including 67 Burger, Moe’s, Hanson Dry and the Emerson. Our photographer recently dropped by the brewery to get a behind the scenes look at how those delicious beers are prepared.

Well, they were going to have a cool blood drive event there today, but that fell through. http://patch.com/E-d2Nc But normally no, it's not open to the public like the Brooklyn Brewery in Willyburg.Wish it was, would be a nice addition to the local drinking scene.   more ›

Viewfinder: Stripes! Local Promoted to Colonel — In His Home!

Marc Anthony Garcia was promoted in a ceremony in his Carlton Avenue home.

Marc Anthony Garcia, the son of locals Yolande and Carlos Garcia, was promoted to colonel in a unique ceremony on Saturday in his family home on Carlton Avenue. Typically, such rituals are carried out at military bases, but Marc Anthony Garcia suggested doing it at his home in historic Fort Greene — the site of a former military base, Fort Putnam, during the Revolutionary War. "[My home] fit the criteria because it was in Fort Greene — with General Greene and George Washington — it had the military touch in terms of history," said Col. Marc Anthony Garcia. "From an historic perspective it was great. As senior officers we study military history." By all accounts, having the ceremony at the elegant brownstone between Willoughby and DeKalb …

Flicks From a Windy Day in the Neighborhood

Our shutterbug braved the brutal weather on Tuesday to snap some photos of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

Few people braved the weather in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill on Feb. 8, but our photographer was there to get a shot of them. Many were walking fast on their way to or from work and weren't stopping in Fort Greene Park, which was deserted and flooded with freezing water.

Fight Over School Closings Comes to Fort Greene

Hundreds of people protested the controversial Panel for Education Policy hearing outside of Brooklyn Tech on Tuesday afternoon.

Fort Greene was in the eye of the storm on Tuesday, as the controversial Panel for Education Policy voted on 10 school closings, as well as several plans to approve the sharing of school buildings with charter schools. New schools Chancellor Cathie Black was also in attendance, and she was regularly heckled throughout the hearing. Our shutterbug snapped pics of protestors before they made their way into the marathon hearing. The Panel will convene again on Feb. 3 to vote on more school closings and shared school building arrangements, including one in Prospect Heights.
