With a Promise of Benefits For All, Development Execs Hail City Point

Mega project gets plenty of kudos—though the status of a planned residential tower is far from clear.

It was all smiles and handshakes on Thursday as development executives and elected officials gathered to celebrate the signing of City Point's first major tenant. Luxury discount retailer Century 21 will fill the mixed-use project's first completed space at 1 Dekalb Ave.—adding yet another recognizable brand to nearby Fulton Street's exploding shopping district. "Downtown Brooklyn is truly on the rise," said Seth Pinsky, president of the city's Economic Development Corp. "We believe that the future of this neighborhood is bright and can only get brighter." However, the timeline for construction of perhaps the most anticipated component of City Point—a 680-foot residential tower that would surpass Fort Greene's One Hanson Place as the …

Reed Named New Prez of Downtown Brooklyn Partnership

The organization has named a successor to Joe Chan, who left the group in September.

Tucker Reed, Director of Special Projects for Two Trees Management Company, has been named president of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, according to the DBP’s Board of Directors. In September, former president Joe Chan left the position to become vice president at Empire State Development, which oversees New York City’s biggest construction projects (such as Atlantic Yards). Families United for Racial and Economic Equality, a local activist group, made waves in October when they demanded that community groups be consulted during the search for Chan’s successor. Reed, 31, a Wesleyan graduate, formerly worked for the State Department in Baghdad, Iraq and served as Chief of Staff of the Baghdad Provincial Reconstruction Team. He was also …

Community Wants Say In Search For New Downtown Brooklyn Partnership Prez

Concerns over the process of selecting a successor to departed DBP head Joe Chan.

When former Downtown Brooklyn Partnership president Joe Chan announced he would leave his post after five years on the job, he left more than a vacant position with an annual salary of $200,000 in his wake. Chan also left a trail of acrimony among grassroots neighborhood activist groups like Families United for Racial and Economic Equality, which demanded last week that they be let into the process of finding a successor. FUREE plans to send a letter to DBE asking that there be a representative from the community on the board of the nonprofit development entity, which is also tasked with finding Chan's successor. At FUREE's 9th Annual Conference last week, Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Brooklyn, pledged her full support for increased …

Downtown Brooklyn Partnership Exec Headed To State Development Corp.

Joe Chan will assume post at agency overseeing Atlantic Yards.

Big changes are afoot in Downtown Brooklyn—and we're not just talking real estate. Joe Chan, head of Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, will step down from his post after years of overseeing the neighborhood's transformation from a underutilized outpost to a thriving retail and residential center. Chan, a resident of Fort Greene, leaves DBP to become vice president of development at Empire State Development, the agency overseeing some of New York's biggest construction projects, including Atlantic Yards. A source with knowledge of the transition confirmed that Chan was on his way out and would be replaced on an interim basis by DBP chief operating officer Michael Burke. Chan's departure came as some of the partnership's chief goals seemed on …
