M.S. 113 is named after Ronald Edmonds, an influential African-American educator who spearheaded a series of major reforms in city schools in the 1970s. The public playground next to the school is also named for Edmonds, and is often teeming with middle school students in uniform. The school received a "C" grade from the city in the 2009-2010 year.
