Welcome to Cumbe, the new home for dance and drumming in Brooklyn. Our classes are fun and energetic (great way to beat the workout blahs) and we welcome all levels! Classes for adults range from traditional (W. African, Afro-Caribbean, etc.) to contemporary (Modern, Dancehall/Reggae and Hip Hop.). We offer Zumba and other fitness classes, as well as percussion with world-class musicians. Our Absolute Beginner series introduces first-timers to a different style each month. Children love the high-energy world of dance with African roots. Classes for ages 1-14 introduce young ones to creative movement and rhythm through a combination of games, song, story-telling, drumming and tumbling. Older children have their pick of styles: African dance & drum, hip hop, acrobatic dance, modern dance with an African diaspora flair, musical theater and capoeira. We also host camps and birthday parties - for all ages! Contact us to plan a party you won't forget. *History* *Established in 2012 * Cumbe opened in January 2012 with the goal of creating a home for African and diaspora dance and music in Brooklyn – of bringing the varied, beautiful and rich range of dances from Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean under one roof. Here, children and adults can immerse themselves in the joy and vitality of music and dance with some of the best teachers in New York City. You'll delve into the rhythms and movements of Senegal, Guinea, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, and more. We also host performances, talks, and throw amazing dance parties, usually with live music. Through dance and music, Cumbe aims to grow a community that celebrates exuberance, sensuality, power and laughter. Come join us and *FEEL THE JOY*! Cumbe is located on Fulton Street right off Flatbush Avenue (near BAM and Barclays) and is very easy to get to – we’re close to most major subway lines.
