Summer Comes Out Swinging: NYC Under Heat Advisory

How hot could it get? How does 100 degrees sound?

This article was written by Megan Riesz.

Because temperatures are expected to reach as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit today and tomorrow, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

“Sensitive populations will be susceptible to adverse health effects,” a NWS alert said.

The NWS instructs residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.

The city has also opened cooling centers – air-conditioned public facilities – to help those experiencing physical discomfort. Find your closest center here.

Here are four other ways to stay cool:

1. Buy An Air Conditioner – It’s only June and the hottest months of the year have yet to arrive. There’s no better way to make future heat waves bearable.
2. See a Movie – Movie theaters guarantee a couple of hours’ worth of air conditioning. Plus there’s food and entertainment.
3. Take a Dip – Public outdoor pools finally open this Thursday, June 27. Check out nycgovparks.com for a list of locations.
4. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth – Ice cream and frozen yogurt are well worth a few dollars when you need a quick fix.
