Make Music New York Touches Down in Clinton Hill, Fort Greene

Performances will include the neighborhood's own P.S. 20 Chorus at Fort Greene Park.


What is widely considered to be New York's largest music event will mark its seventh year this Friday with performances across the city, ranging from hip hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock. 

Make Music New York will help kick off the first official day of summer with a series of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs' many neighborhoods, including spots in Clinton Hill and Fort Greene. 

Clinton Hill 

At Green in BKLYN, electronic band Cosmic Messages will perform from 12-1 p.m., electronic band Sanpo Matsumoto will perform from 1-2 p.m., electronic-pop band The Statue of David will perform from 2-3 p.m., indie-folk singer Barry Kay will perform from 3-4 p.m. and indie-rock singer Daryl Shawn will perform from 6-7 p.m. Green in BKLYN is located at 432 Myrtle Ave., and performances will be canceled should it rain. 

At Fresh Fanatic, indie-folk and soul duo Griot Blues will perform from 1-1:45 p.m., folk band Omega Sirius Moon will perform from 2-2:45 p.m. and folk-rock singer Phil Cohen will perform from 5-6 p.m. Fresh Fanatic is located at 275 Park Ave., and if it rains, performance will move to a nearby sheltered place.

At JACK, experimental performers Arijit Chakraborty will take the stage from 3:30-4 p.m., experimental duo Rachel and Carlos Cordeiro will perform from 4-4:30 p.m. and electronic duo DCRK will perform from 4:30-5 p.m. JACK is located at 505 1/2 Waverly Ave., and performance will go on, rain or shine. 

If you feel like having some music to go along with a meal, Swagga Band featuring Chocolat Jared, a soul and funk band, will perform at SoCo from 4-10 p.m. SoCo is located at 509 Myrtle Ave., and performances will go on, rain or shine. 

At Safeway Locksmith and Hardware, hip-hop group Nubreed Generation will perform from 4:30-5 p.m. The store is located at 998 Bedford Ave., and performances will go on regardless of the weather. 

At Putnam Triangle Plaza will be Hillstock Fest, which will include performances by group Boytoy from 5-6 p.m., rockband The Brooklyn What from 6-7 p.m. and  roots band Brown Rice Family from 7-8 p.m. The Plaza is located at Fulton Street at Grand Avenue, and performances will be moved to a nearby location if it rains. 

Fort Greene 

At Le Petit Bakery, Latin singer Edwin Vazquez will perform from 12:30-3:30 p.m., bluegrass band Sullied Accolades will take the stage from 5:30-7 p.m. and the jazz group Benny Lopez Trio will perform from 6:30-8 p.m. The bakery is located at 354 Myrtle Ave. Performance will go on as scheduled, rain or shine.   

At Fort Greene Park, the P.S. 20 Chorus will perform from 1-3 p.m. and indie-folk duo Griot Blues will perform from 3-4 p.m. Enter the park at Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park, near the Tomorrow sculpture. Performance will go on as scheduled, rain or shine. 

At the Monument Terrace in Fort Greene Park, American Opera Projects as well as Opera On Tap will perform from 5-8 p.m. Get to the Monument from Corner of Willoughby and St. Edwards streets. Should it rain, Performance will move to a nearby sheltered place.

At Gnarly Vines, indie-folk duo Libby & Nicholas will perform from 2-4 p.m. and jazz musician Andrew Ahr will perfom from 4-5:30 p.m. Gnarly Vines is located at 350 Myrtle Ave., and if it should rain, performances will be moved to a nearby sheltered location.

At the Brooklyn Public Library's Walt Whitman branch, teenage indie-rock band MOTP will perform from 2-3 p.m. and Jazz Accompanied by Spoken Word will go on from 3:30-4 p.m. The Library is located at 93 St. Edwards St., and regardless of the weather, performance will go on as scheduled.

As part of FAB Fridays at Cuyler-Gore Park, Haitian rara band Haiti Cultural Exchange Mizik Ayiti! featuring Brother High will perform from 3-4 p.m., country singer Kelly Saint Patrick will perform from 4-5 p.m., experimental Soul Understated feat. Mavis 'SWAN' Poole will perform from 5-6 p.m., electronic band Pillow Theory will perform from 6-7 p.m. and all women's AfroBrazilian Drum Band BatalaNYC will perform from 7-8 p.m. The park is located at 795 Fulton St., and performances will go on, rain or shine.  

After Dark

This year, Make Music New York continues into the night with more than a dozen official After Dark locations throughout the five boroughs, including a local favorite spot. At Putnam's Pub & Cooker, located at 419 Myrtle Ave., performances will take place from 9-11:45 p.m.
