City Parks Foundation Kicks-off Free Summer Sports Programs in Brooklyn Parks

Programs include tennis and golf, and will be offered at Fort Greene Park.

Budding athletes across the borough won't have to travel far to become skilled in a variety of sports this summer, as the City Parks Foundation launches its 2013 Summer Sports Program July 1.

The program gives children ages 6 to 16 the opportunity to participate in free tennis and golf lessons, and the equipment to go along with it, in parks across Brooklyn.

CityParks Tennis will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Fort Greene Park, located at DeKalb and South Portland avenues; on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Playground, located at Malcolm X Boulevard and Marion Street; on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. at Prospect Park, located at Coney Island and Parkside avenues; and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Lincoln Terrace Park, located on Buffalo and East New York Avenues.

The program will run through August 9 and concludes with a tournament for beginners at the Central Park Tennis Center and JP Morgan Chase Aves Tournament for intermediates held at Flushing Meadows Tennis Center in mid-August.

CityParks Golf will be offered at Herbert Von King Park, located at Marcy and Greene avenues on Mondays and Wednesdays for 6- to 8-year-olds from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and for 9- to 16-year-olds from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

CityParks Golf will be held in two sessions, running from July 1 through July 26 and from July 29 through August 23.

The program also includes track and field lessons, and gives New York City kids the chance to learn the basics of the sport, from hurdles and relay races, to long jump, shot put and javelin throw. All participating youngsters have the opportunity to display the basic skills learned at the end of the season at an organized track meet held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island on August 9. For more track and field locations, and a full list of City Parks Foundation’s 2013 kids programs, please visit www.CityParksFoundation.org.
