BEEP Welcomes Home Olympic Medalist Lia Neal

Brooklyn's own Lia Neal welcomed back to much fanfare

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, elected officials and hundreds of fellow swimmers today welcomed Olympic Bronze Medalist and Fort Greene resident Lia Neal back to the facility where she trained—the George Delacorte Pool at Asphalt Green in Manhattan.

Also joining the homecoming were the Olympian’s proud parents, Rome and Siu.

“Lia is proof that if you work hard, never give up, and believe in yourself, there’s no limit to what you can achieve,” said BP Markowitz. “At only 17, she’s got it all—a bronze medal and a Brooklyn address—and there’s no doubt that whatever she does, she’ll continue to make Brooklyn proud.”

Neal swam the women’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay along with her teammates—Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Allison Schmitt—and captured the bronze in 3 minutes 34.24 seconds, finishing behind Australia (3:33.15) and the Netherlands (3:33.79).

An Open letter to Lia Neal: You have MESSED UP already! You allowed yourself to be manipulated into being posed for photos with Boro President Marty Markowitz. Marty Markowitz is no friend of Fort Greene's poor and certainly no friend of NYCHA public housing. I ask you to use your new found celebrity to draw attention to the pain and suffering of poor folks in Fort Greene's NYCHA projects.

In response to Joe Gonzalez: I am a bit confused as to why posing with MM is equivalent to being manipulated? Can the young lady, who has worked her butt off to achieve that medal be celebrated by EVERYBODY, and not just "poor folks"? I seriously doubt that when she was putting in those hours of practice that she kept repeating to herself, "I am here to support the "poor folks." How about letting her be who she is, and if she can bring attention to a cause, so be it. But let her dream her dreams; think her thoughts; be she wants to be; and live her life, for goodness sake! The only one to whom she owes anything is God for giving her the discipline and ability to achieve that medal. Your comment is equivalent to that of the stupid women who criticized Gabby Douglas's hair. The fact that they did says more about them than they know. Respectfully, Joe Gonzalez, get off the young lady's case!

@MFreder517: MM (Marty Markowitz) is a CLOWN who has ignored the suffering of poor folks living in Fort Greene's NYCHA projects. By posing with Markowitz, Ms. Neal gives Mr. Markowitz an undeserved legitimacy. Marty Markowitz has totally ignored NYCHA's problems. I would have liked Ms. Neal to have publicly asked Mr. Markowitz to speak to the pain of poor people who reside in NYCHA under Third World-like conditions. Everyone who "makes" it has an obligation to reach back in some way to help those left behind. Ms. Neal got to her current position I'm sure because someone struggled hard to lift her up and make it possible for her to have access to great sport training programs.
