-----  CLASSES FOR AGES 1-5  ----

Uhuru with Jamie Philbert • Wednesday 9:45-10:45am (Free & Creative Movement, Ages 1-4)

Uhuru (the kiswahili word for "freedom") inspires creative movement using rhymes, games, interactive storytelling, musical instruments, and props. This class is designed to help children develop motor coordination and increase spatial and rhythmic awareness, and generally create a positive learning experience. Jamie Philbert is the founder of Echoes Dance Company and has had work presented at numerous venues including Aaron Davis Hall/E-moves and Lincoln Center Out Of Doors.

Drumming4Toddlers! with Brother Kojo • Sunday 10:30-11:30am (Ages 2-5)

Catch the excitement of the djembe drum and its powerful rhythms. Join master drummer "Brother" Kojo for a unique African percussion class in which parents are also encouraged (but not required) to participate. Bring a drum if you have one - if not, we will provide! Kojo Johnson is founder of The HAND Arts and Edutainment.

Dance, Drum & Song with M’Bemba Bangoura • Tuesday, 4:30pm-5:30pm

Learn the exhilarating steps and rhythms of West African dance from premier Guinean drummer/dancer M’Bemba Bangoura.  M’Bemba earned the status of master drummer at the age of 21 and played with Ballet Djoliba, Guinea’s leading dance company.

African to Hip Hop with Steffanie Burchette • Thursday, 4:30pm-5:30pm

Journey through the incredible world of African and diaspora dance, from traditional African dances all the way to today’s salsa, hip hop and jazz.  Steffanie has been teaching dance since she was 12 and loves to make dance and fitness fun for kids.

Good Boogie with Lisa Green • Saturday, 10:00am-11:00am

Children will have a blast exploring movement and dancing to r&b, hip hop and other ‘gotta-dance’ popular music!  Lisa-Hazina Green is a gifted dance educator with a passion for working with kids.

African to Hip Hop with Funmilayo Chesney • Wednesday, 4:15pm-5:15pm

Journey through the incredible world of African and diaspora dance, from traditional African dances all the way to today’s salsa, hip hop and jazz.  A master dance instructor for 20 years, Funmilayo is the founder of Fusha Dance Company.

Sawubona: African Fusion with Jamie Philbert • Friday, 4:00pm-5:30pm                                    

In Sawubona (a South African greeting meaning “I see you”), students will create their own dances using creative movement, performance techniques and visual arts.  Jamie Philbert, founder of Echoes Dance Company, will guide the group in developing and presenting their ideas. 

Percussion Explosion with Kenny Anderson • Saturday, 3:00pm-4:00pm

Explore rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, West Africa and New Orleans with Kenny Anderson, who has worked with some of the best musicians from around the globe.

West African Dance & Drum with Vado Diomande • Monday, 4:30pm-5:30pm

Learn the exhilarating steps and rhythms of West African dance from master dancer and drummer Vado Diomande, who served as a principal dancer for the Ballet National de Cote d’Ivoire.

Hip Hop with Roger G • Thursday, 4:30pm-5:30pm

Bust a move with a pro from the street.  Roger G., who danced in Michael Jackson’s “Bad” video, will break down different hip hop styles like popping and locking, breaking, and street jazz.

Rhythms of Brazil with Carlos de Oliveira, Ages 8-14 • Sunday, 3:30pm-4:30pm

Learn the rhythms of Brazil with Carlos de Oliveira, founder of the New York Samba School.  Kids will play a range of instruments: the pandeiro (like the tambourine), agogo (bells), congas, and more. *This class is for ages 8-14*

Haitian Drum with Morgan Zwerlein, Ages 10-18 • Thursday, 5:00pm-6:00pm

Learn how to play powerful drum rhythms from Haiti with Morgan Zwerlein, a member of one of New York City’s most influential Haitian percussion ensembles, Troupe Makandal. *This class is for Ages 10-18*

Stepping with Sduduzo Ka-Mbili • Saturday, 11:00am-12:00pm

Learn the original stepping dance – the exhilarating gumboot dance from South Africa – with the founder of South African dance troupe Juxtapower.

Capoeira with Gafanhoto Ribe • Saturday, 3:30pm-4:30pm    

Kids love capoeira, which combines dance, martial arts and music, because it is fun, acrobatic and challenging!  Gafanhoto, from Bahia, Brazil, studied and danced with renowned capoeira master Jelon Vieira.

Take a journey through the evolution of hip hop dance with the founder of Fusha Dance Company! Learn old-school to new-school, as well as moves from styles that influenced Hip Hop like Funk, Mambo, and African.
