VIDEO: Brooklyn Tech Football Runs Off With Victory Over John Adams

Kevi Shyti and James Gales lead Tech to opening day victory over John Adams, 44-14, on Saturday.

For the football team, the first play from scrimmage during Saturday afternoon’s season opening game against John Adams caused a great deal of concern.

John Adams running back Antoine Arnold shot up the field for a 50-yard rushing touchdown. A two-point conversion put the Spartans up 8-0.

Was this a sign of the future season for Brooklyn Tech?

The Engineers responded and gave fans plenty reason to be excited about the year, defeating John Adams 44-14 at home at Charles B. Wang Field.

“I’m just happy that we (bounced back),” Brooklyn Tech’s explosive back James Gales said. “After that we were deflated on the sidelines. We had to have our captains come and pick us up and thank God we did.”

On the very next drive after the opening touchdown, the Engineers put 8 points on the board. Starting from their own 30, Tech put together a ten-play drive that was capped off by a 9-yard touchdown keeper from Gales in the wildcat formation. The Engineer’s two-point conversion was successful.

Tech’s special teams unit continued the momentum on John Adams’ next possession. Randolph Vigilance and Kyvaune Brammer pressured the Adams’ punter, who then threw an interception on an attempt to save the play. Tech senior Suyetta Griffin ran the ball for a touchdown on the interception.

A failed two-point conversion left the score at 14-8.

The seesaw battle continued on John Adams’ next possession as running back Devven Baker scored from nine yards out to tie the game at 14.

From there, however, the Engineers scored 30 unanswered points. Working the two-minute drill to perfection at the end of the first half, Brooklyn Tech quarterback Kevi Shyti found Brammer in the end zone as time expired. With the two-point conversion, Tech led 30-14 at the half.

“(The two-minute drill is) something that we work hard on,” Brooklyn Tech coach Kyle McKenna said. “We work hard on being efficient with the two-minute drill every week.”

The Engineers put the game away on the opening kickoff of the second half when senior Adonijah Smith broke away for an 80-yard return and score.

For Brooklyn Tech, getting on the field was great after an entire off-season to anticipate the game.

“For me personally, I was too excited,” Gales said. “I couldn’t get any sleep last night. I was just ready to come out and play.”

Gales and Shyti were the focal point of the Engineer offense, as Gales ran the ball for 113 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries, while Shyti threw for 51 yards and a touchdown. Shyti also ran for a score.

The Tech defense also played well after allowing the opening score. The team had to deal with explosive receiver Shane Hubbard, who is on the New York Post’s Players to Watch list. On Saturday, Hubbard had 8 catches for 96 yards, but Tech was able to keep him out of the end zone.
