Update: Nets Season Opener Cancelled

Mayor Bloomberg announced the decision to postpone the game Wednesday afternoon.

Update, 3:30 p.m.: Mayor Bloomberg announced that the Nets' inaugural game at the Barclays Center, scheduled for Thursday, has been cancelled.

In a press conference delivered Wednesday afternoon, Bloomberg expressed disappointment that the showdown between the Nets and cross-town rivals, the New York Knicks, would have to be put on hold.

"I'm sorry about the game ... I was personally going to take my daughters," he said. "It's a great stadium and it was going to be a great game."

The Brooklyn Nets intend to forge ahead with their season-opening game Thursday against the Knicks at Barclays Center despite the lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy, the New York Times is reporting.

The big question though is how fans will make it to the stadium when it seems likely that subway service will still be suspended.

Earlier in 2012, the Nets and Barclays Center began a public relations campaign to encourage the public to take the subway to the nearby Atlantic Terminal in order to minimize the impact of motorists looking for parking on the streets of adjacent neighborhoods.

The issue of overflowing the streets with parked cars and potential traffic jams was the subject of a public traffic planning meeting at Brooklyn's Borough Hall in May.

The decision to play the game as scheduled made jointly by the NBA, the mayor's office, and Barclays Center.

But what do you think? Should the game go ahead, or should it be postponed until subway service has been restored? Let your fellow Patch readers know what you think in the comments below.
