PEP Votes to Close M.S. 103, Will Replace With New School

Troubled Clinton Hill educational institution to phase out its current students to make way for new program.

The city’s Panel for Educational Policy voted last night to phase out Clinton Hill’s M.S. 103 Satellite Three, and replace it with a new school for grades 6-8 to be called M.S. 351, according to the Brooklyn Paper.

In December, Patch reported that as candidates for closure.

The Gates Avenue school recently received a D grade from the Department of Education, with 33.7 percent demonstrating proficiency in math and 18.6 percent in English for the 2010-11 school year.

According to the Paper, officials at last night’s PEP meeting cited low grades, as well as low attendance and safety issues, as reasons for the schools closure.

“It’s not always our belief that helping a school externally will do anything,” DOE spokesman Frank Thomas told the Paper. “Often you’ll need a new program and school culture.”

That article says that current M.S. 103 students are still set to graduate over the next two years, but the school will stop accepting new sixth grade students.
