Sapphire is a poet, novelist, and performer whose work explores the experience of poverty and struggle in black America. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling novelPush, which won the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s First Novelist Award and was the basis of the Academy Award winning motion picture Precious. She is also the author of The Kid, the recently released companion novel to Push, as well as the poetry collections American Dreams and Black Wings & Blind Angels.
