Education Panel Approves Community Roots Co-Location

9 votes for, 3 against, as Panel for Education Policy approves charter school's expansion into the middle school grades at P.S. 287.

The city Panel for Education Policy approved Community Roots Charter School's co-location with in a meeting at on Wednesday night.

The vote was 9 in favor of the proposed co-location, with Manhattan representative Patrick Sullivan, Bronx representative Wilfredo Pagan and Queens representative Dmytro Fedkowskyj opposed.

Brooklyn representative Gbubemi Okotieuro joined his Staten Island colleague in being the only non-mayoral PEP appointees to vote for Community Roots' expansion.

In a statement released on the eve of the vote, Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Fort Greene, reiterated her support for Community Roots' expansion while acknowledging hurt feelings on both sides of the issue— at P.S. 287's Navy Street auditorium last week.

"Much like the previous proposal, this plan is causing community unrest and conflict ... " James said, referring to Community Roots' at their present building, P.S. 67. "However, I believe that there is sufficient room in the P.S. 287 facility for both schools to fit comfortably and continue to grow for the betterment of District 13 youth."
