Surging Navy Yard Serves As Backdrop For CB2 Meet

Economic and job development on display in the heart of Old Brooklyn.

Once a prime example of urban industrial decay, the Brooklyn Navy Yard served as the venue of choice for a May general monthly meeting of Community Board 2 Wednesday night.

Featuring an update on ongoing construction by Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. president Andrew Kimball, the meeting was held in a gleaming, state-of-the-art BLDG 92—a visitor and jobs center .

Admiral's Row Development, Jobs and a Tour of BLDG 92

Kimball provided an update on planned construction of a mixed-use development including a supermarket at Admiral's Row.

"We've got the keys," Kimball told CB2, referring to the of the site from the U.S. Army to the city.

Stabilization work at the site has already begun, according to Kimball. Also, light manufacturing will be placed over the planned supermarket—a developer for which still has not been announced.

On the jobs front, BLDG 92's relocated Brooklyn Navy Yard employment center will open in June.

A tour of the visitor's center, which includes a modular building attached to the site's restored Marine Commandant's residence, was offered to all CB2 participants at the end of the meeting.

Another Sidewalk Cafe Application

CB2 approved a proposed outdoor seating area at located at 25 Lafayette Ave. opposite Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Bike Share Locations

, the city Department of Transportation will unveil what looks to be a final draft of bike share locations at a meeting of CB2's Transportation Committee on May 15.

Pedestrian Plaza Planned For Fox Square

CB2 voted to approve plans for a seating area and plaza at Fox Square at Fulton Street and Flatbush Avenue Ext.—months after for nearby Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

Emphasis was made that Five Guys will not get exclusive access to tables and chairs. Included in the plans were three planted trees at the center of the square—to be watered by either the Parks Department or Five Guys.

A bike share location is also proposed for the spot.

A Call to Save G Train "Extension"

Expressing support for to keep the G train operating between Smith-9th St and Church Av stations, CB2 voted to urge the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to rethink a plan to scrap the service after work on the Culver Line is complete.

Goodbye, Lincoln

Restler, who is running again for state committeeman in a redrawn 50th Assembly District, announced that May's general meeting would be his last as a member of CB2.
