Squadron vs. Lander in Brooklyn Battle of the Burgers

Cook-off held to help highlight Greenmarket's bevvy of fresh fruits and vegetables for all residents—regardless of income.

Elected officials on the national stage might be duking it out over the future of Medicare, Bush-era tax cuts and the approaching "fiscal cliff," but here in Brooklyn, the battle between politicians was of a more homegrown variety.


State Sen. Daniel Squadron and Councilman Brad Lander, both D-Brooklyn, went head-to-head Sunday in a hamburger cook-off using fresh ingredients at Carroll Street Greenmarket.

At stake were bragging rights, of course, and most importantly, getting the word out about the fresh produce at the city's Greenmarkets—many of which now accept food stamps and benefit cards as payment.

Aided by student sous chefs from , the pols fired up their propane-powered Weber grills and started slicing, dicing and patting their burgers into near-perfection.

It was 'fresh produce' because of the way the animals we just so happened to be cooking were grown. The cows, ducks and sheep were fed grass to produce the best milk and meat. We aren't all vegetarians or vegans, but eating meat that has been taken care of properly prior to death is important as well. The senator and fellow councilman were there to spread knowledge on this topic and show that things out of the norm for most people can still be tasty.
