Less Than 50 Trash Cans Left For Rat-Weary Residents Near Atlantic Yards

Vermin-resistant receptacles 'going like hotcakes.'

The office of Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Brooklyn, may have a solution.

Rat-resistant trash cans, paid for by Atlantic Yards developer Forest City Ratner and James' office, will be available at no cost for residents of the 35th Council District, which includes much of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The catch? As of Friday afternoon, less than 50 receptacles remain to be distributed, according to James' office.

Expanding from an area immediately surrounding Atlantic Yards—including a in Fort Greene earlier this year—the effort seeks to combat a scourge that residents near the mega-project .

“We don’t have a normal rat problem, we have a rat tsunami,” said one resident at a June meeting organized by the Dean Street Block Association and James.

They can be picked up at Councilwoman James' District Office, 67 Hanson Place, between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
