Last Major Roadblock to Admiral's Row Redevelopment Removed

Approval clears way for supermarket, retail and industrial space.

A modern, mixed-use replacement for the at Admiral's Row just took another big step towards becoming reality.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corp. president and CEO Andrew Kimball announced on Tuesday the approval of a final hand-over from the federal government to the city—clearing one the biggest barriers to the site's development.

In about a month, Admiral's Row will officially become part of the 300-acre Brooklyn Navy Yard, which has quickly evolved from a post-industrial backwater into one of the .

“The transformation at the Brooklyn Navy Yard over the past decade is a prime example of our administration’s commitment to revitalizing old industrial areas, especially along our waterfront,” Bloomberg said. “Now, this additional development will bring more new jobs to our city’s premier industrial park and help make it a great place to work.”

Plans for the site include a 74,000-square-foot supermarket, 79,000 square-feet of additional neighborhood retail space and 127,000 square-feet of industrial, creating around 500 jobs, according to backers of the project.

Approval of the transfer to the city from the U.S. National Guard, who inherited the site in the years after the Navy Yard's heyday, came after the successful completion of the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure—.

Despite this week's news, significant hurdles remain in the redevelopment of Admiral's Row.

According to Bloomberg, the city has spent $200 million in basic infrastructure investments at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, funding the administration says has attracted $400 million in private investment for new and existing buildings.

Though given the state of the city, state and national economy, the private investment climate for Admiral's Row remained unclear.

A Request For Proposal—the first step towards identifying a developer for the site—will be sent out once the transfer from the federal goverment to the city is complete.
