FEMA Extends Sandy Shelter Assistance Program By Three Weeks

Also, city residents affected by the storm have one more week to register for federal disaster assistance.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended its shelter assistance program for Hurricane Sandy victims by three weeks.

The new checkout date is April 14 for those affected by the storm who have been staying cost-free at hotels.

FEMA’s Transitional Sheltering Assistance program has been housing Sandy victims whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed at hotels throughout the five boroughs. The cost of the room and taxes were paid directly to the hotel by the federal agency.

Meals, telephone calls and other charges are not covered by FEMA.

The deadline to register for federal disaster assistance is March 29.

Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.
