Endorsement Round-up: 8th Congressional District

High stakes seen in the race to replace Rep. Ed Towns.

As the June primary for the newly created 8th Congressional District draws closer, influential groups are taking sides about who should hold the Central Brooklyn seat of . Here is a list of the endorsements made in the race in the past week:

Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries

Jeffries nabbed the endorsement of Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, a union representing 100,000 workers throughout the five boroughs.

"It is an honor to receive the endorsement of this proud and honorable organization," Jeffries said. "The quality of life in New York is built upon a strong economy, a strong workforce, and the strong buildings in which we all live and work. The Building and Construction Trades Council has been a critical force in creating all of them. In Washington, I will stand with the BCTC to fight for fair contracts and wages, and the right to a decent quality of life for all New Yorkers."

Councilman Domenic Recchia, Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, state Senator Diane Savino and district leaders Dilia Schack and Mark Davidovich, all of South Brooklyn, also endorsed Jeffries this week.

Councilman Charles Barron

NYCteachers.com decided to endorse Barron in the race for Towns' seat, releasing a statement Thursday that read:

"Charles Barron has shown over many years that he stands with the teachers of NYC. He has stood with teachers at rallies to fight school closings, rallies to fight charter schools, which is an attempt to kill unions and he has been on the frontlines with the teachers of New York City."
