The city’s Department of Buildings is kicking off its annual construction safety week by handing down nearly $1 million in fines to sites across the five boroughs.

Engineers, architects and construction experts are taking part in the DOB’s Construction Safety Week conference, which began Monday at Manhattan’s Marriott Downtown.
But aside from hosting discussions on topics, such as powering electric cranes and developing high rises in flood zones, the DOB issued an estimated $1 million in fines to more than 900 low-rise city construction sites.

“As development increases across the city, so must our focus on construction safety,” said Robert LiMandri, the DOB’s commissioner. “Any construction operation presents certain risks and we are working closely with industry members to mitigate those risks so every worker goes home safely at the end of each shift.”

LiMandri said the city is cracking down on dangerous construction sites after accidents increased 37 percent in 2012. Seven of the eight fatal accidents took place at construction sites less than nine stories high.
