Community Board 2 Meeting Hosts Hot Topics and Holiday Wishes

Brooklyn Bridge Park was the major talking point at the last Community Board 2 meeting of the year.

Community Board Chair John Dew started last night’s meeting on a light note by inviting Assemblywoman Joan Millman to swear in all of the incumbent executive board members, who all ran unopposed.

The bulk of last night’s meeting was filled with warm holiday wishes from various community board members and local politicians, but also a heavy focus on the soon to begin construction of a hotel and residential building right next to Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Andrew Lastowecky, representing the Parks and Recreation Committee, presented the plans of seven different companies, detailing how each would use the space.

The committee’s goal was to have the community board approve each layout, but with certain recommendations, like making sure that the buildings have convenient public restrooms and restaurants for park goers, adequate underground parking so that the street isn’t too crowded with vehicles, and no residences on the ground floor to keep disputes from occurring between park goers and residents, among other stipulations.

The community board approved the Parks committee’s recommendations, and they will now be sent over to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation for consideration.

Various other committee members spoke at the meeting as well. The Economic Development Committee approved the handing out of “swag bags” filled with promotional material to promote local businesses in Downtown Brooklyn.

The Health, Environment and Social Services Committee announced that all liquor license applications have been approved, and a substance abuse program geared to help residents of the Wyckoff housing projects in Boerum Hill was also approved.

A representative of the Brooklyn Navy Yard announced two upcoming building projects, and encouraged local, minority, and woman owned construction companies to contact the yard and apply for the job of building them.

Last but certainly not least, a representative from the Brooklyn Public Library reminded the community board, and now all of you, that free books from the library’s website are available to download to that shiny new e-reader you’re getting for the holidays.
