City Council Mulls Legislation to Change Muni Meter System: Report

Meters would be deactivated when parking rules are not in effect.

Article by Nathan Duke

The City Council is reviewing legislation that calls for Muni Meters to be deactivated when parking rules are not in effect, 1010 Wins reported.

Under the bill, the meters would not be activated when alternate side parking rules are suspended or when receipt paper is not available.

Currently, drivers cannot get refunds if they deposit money into a Muni Meter when a payment is not required.

“We are trying to make the ‘gotcha tickets’ something of the past in the city of New York,” City Council Speaker Christine Quinn told 1010 Wins. “We want to stop taking money out of people’s pockets that we don’t have a right to take.”

The bill calls for restructuring the city’s 13,000 meters to only accept cash when drivers are required to pay. The meters would reject money if the machine is unable to print receipts and would be turned off when required parking expires for the day.
