Adult Education Fair Hits Borough Hall

The New York City Council and Marty Markowitz encourage Brooklyn residents to get their GED.

New York City wants its residents to get educated.

Next Wednesday, the New York City Council and Borough President Marty Markowitz will host the from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Brooklyn Borough Hall.

The aim is to encourage the city’s 1.6 million adult residents without a high school diploma to go back to school, and ultimately help them secure steady employment during tough economic times.

The event will offer pre-GED test screening, and attendees can sign up for free classes in GED prep, literacy and English. Major adult education providers such as Brooklyn College CUNY and Brooklyn Adult Learning Center will also be in attendance, offering opportunities for early course registration.

“This all spun out of something that Speaker Quinn made one of her initiatives last year in her State of the City address,” said Nick Rolf in the City Council's Community Outreach Unit “New York State has the lowest passage of GED takers in the country.”

The event in the second such event citywide: at the Bronx Adult Education Fair in November, 300 people attended and 250 took the pre-GED screening.
