Woman Fights Thief For iPhone: This Week's Police Blotter

Latest robbery in Fort Greene Park does not go down so easy for mugger.

Woman fights back for iPhone

A 21-year-old woman exiting near Fort Greene Place and Dekalb Avenue on March 8 at 7:35 p.m. did not give up her iPhone without a fight, fending off her attacker by stepping on her dropped device with her foot to prevent the perp from picking it up. Unfortunately, the mugger pushed the woman away, picking up the iPhone and fleeing into the park. An extensive search by police did not turn up the suspect. It should be noted that most self-defense experts, like , caution mugging victims from physically engaging their attackers.

Who's the boss?

Worker-management relations at Bob's Restaurant Equipment at 967 Atlantic Ave. took a turn for the worse on March 5 when the supervisor overseeing a 42-year-old man struck his employee with a stick after an argument over the worker's wages. The incident, which occurred at approximately 11 a.m., left the employee battered and bruised.

Teenage girl punched and robbed of iPhone

A night at the Flushing Avenue Ext.  went terribly wrong on March 7-8 when a group of men approached a 19-year-old girl at 1:10 a.m. outside the restaurant on University Plaza and demanded her iPhone. One of the perps then punched the teen in the face, causing her fall to the ground, cutting her face and elbow.

Shelter resident attacked with shoe

Police arrested Lavinia Garvin, 59, for hitting a resident of a shelter located at 200 Tillary St. with a "moccasin-style" shoe, causing pain and swelling to the victim's head and face on March 5 at 5:40 p.m. No motive was given for the attack.

Target employee choked until unconscious

On March 6 at approximately 2:30 p.m., a 20-year-old worker at the Target at Atlantic Terminal Mall found himself in a heated argument with a customer that quickly turned ugly. Police say the customer, Dwayne Brown, 29, lunged forward at the employee and began choking him until he lost consciousness. Luckily, a fellow Target worker managed to separate the two men.

School Safety Officer attacked

At P.S. K753  on Clermont Avenue, a female School Safety Officer was spit on and punched by an assailant on March 8 at 11:45 a.m. The officer was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Park Slope with bruises. Info on the suspect was not immediately available.

Duo arrested for trashing bodega

Police arrested Fabian Bardales, 21, and Mazin Samhan, 19, for hitting the proprietor of a store at 382 Myrtle Ave. over the head with beer bottle and throwing another bottle through the store's front window on March 10 at 1:10 a.m. The worker received medical treatment at the scene. Police located the suspects at 1:50 a.m. at an address on Vanderbilt Avenue in Clinton Hill.

Choking victim gets justice, courtesy of the men and women of the 88th

Victoria Hargrove, 22, is accused of approaching a 20-year-old woman from behind and choking her up to the point of losing consciousness at a residence on St. Felix Street on March 10 at 7:15 p.m. Arrest was made shortly afterward at the scene of the incident.

Ford Econoline stolen from St. James Place

The owner of a 1997 Ford Econoline with New York plates reported the vehicle stolen on March 7 after parking it on St. James Place near Clifton Place in Clinton Hill. No broken glass was found at the scene.

Unattended scooter goes missing

A 2012 Yamaha scooter was chained and locked to a fence abutting a sidewalk on Lefferts Place on February 2. Upon returning March 9—more than a month later—the vehicle was reported missing. A canvass by police failed to turn up clues into the disappearance.

Woman choked and punched for cellphone

Two perps approached a 21-year-old woman on the sidewalk on Greene Avenue near Washington Avenue on March 8 at 9:18 p.m., putting her in a choke hold, punching her and then stealing her pink Sanyo cellphone. The victim received a bump and bruise to the right eye.

Victoria's Secret shopper loses $35 at register—no lingerie involved

While at the Victoria's Secret at Atlantic Center on March 8 at noon, a 22-year-old woman left $35, along with a debit and medical insurance card, on the counter only to turn away for a moment and find the items missing.

Laptop and tablet stolen

On March 9 at 11:45 a.m. an IBM ThinkPad and Samsung Galaxy Tablet was reported stolen from a vehicle in the vicinity of 157 Adelphi St. in Fort Greene.

Perps at-large after Fleet Street getaway

Two thieves stole an 18-year-old woman's cellphone and fled southbound on Fleet Street and then eastbound on Willoughby Street on March 10 at 5:45 p.m.
