Surge in Robberies and Burglaries Prompts Police to Issue Special Warning

Fort Greene-Clinton Hill residents should be extra vigilant.

It's official: crime is on the rise.

Officers at the , which covers Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, put out a special advisory for residents to remain vigilant in the wake of an increase in robberies and burglaries in the area.

According to police, subway riders entering and exiting neighborhood train stations—especially at night—should avoid displaying expensive electronics, including iPhones, iPods and other mobile devices.

In recent weeks, in the number of robberies involving thieves allegedly waiting for commuters to arrive at their destinations and taking advantage of other distractions to move in on their victims.

Women, according to police, should be particularly vigilant.

In addition to the increase in robberies, the 88th Precinct warned residents south of Fort Greene Park to keep electronics such as laptops out of plain sight. Police said there had been an increase in burglaries involving thieves looking for computers visible through windows and breaking-in to grab the items.

In response, the 88th Precinct is increasing street patrols in the area.
