Police Nab Cellphone Robber

Incident occurred on S. Oxford Street on Wednesday afternoon.

Call it a case of the New York Police Department being at the right place at the right time.

Officers caught a robbery suspect just minutes after he allegedly snatched a cellphone from a 51-year-old woman on S. Oxford Street Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at 2:13 p.m. while the woman walked on S. Oxford between Lafayette and Dekalb avenues.

Officers swarmed to the location, where the suspect was brought into custody at 2:29 p.m., police said.

Police arrested Emmanuel Newkirk, 18, and charged him with robbery.

The 88th Precinct, which covers Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, asking residents—particularly women—to remain vigilant in the face of a rash of cellphone thefts, especially around local subway stations.

No injuries were reported in Wednesday's incident.
