NYPD Gives More Bike Citations Than Speeding Tickets: Report

NYPD ticketed more cyclists than speeding motorists last year.

Despite the high number of speeding drivers across the five boroughs, the New York Police Department issues more tickets for cycling on the sidewalk than speeding in a car, StreetsBlog wrote Tuesday.

According to the blog, local police precincts issued just over 19,000 tickets to speeding motorists in 2012, compared to 25,000 sidewalk riding tickets.

StreetsBlog also wrote that the 25,000 figure does not include moving violations for cycles, like running stop signs and traffic signals.

In total, more than 70,000 drivers were cited for speeding, but the vast majority of those were busted by the New York State Highway Patrol.

As the post points out, drivers moving through New York City streets at high speeds are the overwhelming cause of traffic deaths, according to the Department of Transportation.

What do you think? Are local precinct's right to focus on sidewalk safety? Or are they missing out on stopping unsafe motorists? Let us know what you think in the comments.
