Nine-Year-Old Girl Beaten With Belt: This Week's Police Blotter

A rundown of reported crimes in the neighborhood over the past week.

Nine-Year-Old Beaten By Mother

On Sunday morning, police received an anonymous call about a child being assaulted at an apartment on Lefferts Place. Upon arriving, officers could hear the sound of a woman beating her daughter with a belt. The 9-year-old girl was found to have numerous bruises about her body, including her left arm, both inner thighs and back. The girl was sent to Brooklyn Hospital. The Administration of Children’s Services later released the girl to the custody of a grandmother.

Attack on Neighbor With Box Cutter

After a man accidently sprayed water into his neighbor's window while cleaning the front of his building on Lafayette Avenue between Classon and Grand avenues last Friday at 4 p.m., the suspect emerged from his apartment and attacked the man in the first floor hallway with a box cutter. The suspect, 51, cut the victim on the left ear.

Shoe Used As Weapon in Assault

A woman received minor cuts after a 20-year-old woman hit her with the heel of her shoe after an altercation in front of 180 Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene just before 3 a.m. last Friday. The suspect is also accused of biting the left middle finger of a second victim.

Laptop Snatched, Then Smashed at Smooch Cafe 

A 32-year-old woman had her laptop stolen by a 14-year-old male while working at Smooch Cafe on Carlton Avenue last Wednesday at approximately 1:30 p.m. Police apprehended the suspect two blocks away—but not before the teen threw the $1,500 laptop to the ground. 

Struggle With Vendor 

A cart vendor was punched and then robbed of $20 in cash at Ashland and Hanson Place last Wednesday. The thief, described by police as a male in his late-40s, was caught shortly after.

A Bear Hug, Then a Robbery

While walking home near the intersection of Adelphi Street and Willoughby Avenue last Wednesday, a woman in her 30s was approached from behind by unknown male who placed her in a bear hug. The suspect then attempted to grab the victim's Sprint HTC Evo cellphone. When she resisted, the man displayed a black firearm, after which the woman handed him her cellphone. The suspect then fled westbound on Willoughby.

Assault at Auburn Family Shelter

An 18-year-old woman entered the Auburn Family Shelter at 39 Auburn Place on Aug. 1 at 8:30 p.m. to report an assault by another woman in her 20s. After investigating, responders came to the conclusion that the teen had received a cut to the left side of her face by a pen. Police arrested the woman, 28, and charged her with assault. 

Police Officer Attacked at Atlantic Terminal

On Aug. 2 at 5:25 p.m., a police officer responded to a dispute between two females at the Atlantic Avenue LIRR station. After attempting to eject one of the women to prevent the situation from escalating, the suspect kicked, scratched and bit the officer, with one of the bites breaking the skin on his right arm. The woman, 18, yelled, "Get your hands off me," before being taken into custody and charged with assaulting a police officer. 

Man Attacked With Knife By Woman

A 49-year-old woman cut a 51-year-old man on both arms and upper back with a knife after an argument last Friday morning at Whitman Houses that started over him sleeping with other females and smoking all the cigarettes. The victim claimed the suspect was currently on parole for previously stabbing their child. The woman was charged with assault. 

Elderly Woman Finds Car Missing

An 81-year-old woman returning to where she said she parked her car at 709 Fulton St. between St. Felix Street and Fort Greene Place found her 2004 Lexus missing around noontime last Thursday. Police failed to find signs of a break-in. A canvass of the neighborhood did not turn up any suspects. 

Car Parked On Washington Ave. Burglarized

A 38-year-old owner of a 1997 Nissan Altima found his passenger side window smashed and steering column damaged on Washington Avenue between Willoughby and Myrtle avenues sometime during the morning hours of Aug. 2. Damages to the car exceeded $250.

Bump and Run Robbery

A woman in her 30s discovered her wallet missing the morning after riding the B54 bus Aug. 1, when an unknown male carrying a box bumped her. The victim told police she didn't get a good look at the man after the brief encounter. The woman later discovered her credit card had been used to make a transaction. 

Electrical Room at Ingersoll Houses Burglarized

An employee at Ingersoll Houses reported Aug. 1 that electrical equipment worth $3,500 had been taken from a basement room without permission. The complainant said numerous workers and housing authority staff had access to the room, which showed no signs of forced entry. 

iPhone Snatched By Bicycle-Riding Thief

An unknown male grabbed an iPhone 4 from a woman walking on Willoughby Street on the north side of the Pratt Institute campus last Thursday at 5:45 p.m. The suspect then fled on his bike eastbound on Willoughby. 

Motors Worth $20K Stolen

An employee of Crocker Wheeler Motors, located at 63 Flushing Ave., is accused of stealing two motors worth $20,000 during a period between Wednesday and Friday morning last week. The accused, a man in his early 20s, has been charged with grand larceny. 

Ex-Girlfriend Refuses To Turn Over Cellphone

A driver attempting to return a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to a man who left the device in his cab ran into some unexpected trouble last week. After the driver dropped off the phone to the man's ex-girlfriend, the woman refused to hand it over to its rightful owner. Police advised the owner of the smartphone to go to Family Court for an order of protection after the woman made several texts acknowledging that she had the cellphone.
