Neighborhood Sees Spike in Vehicle Thefts

Six incidents reported in less than a week within the confines of the 88th Precinct.

It was a busy week for car thieves.

Over a period spanning just a few days, six suspected vehicle thefts were reported to the 88th Precinct, which covers Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

Of those thefts, four were reported on Saturday alone.

The list includes the disappearance of two late-1990s Nissan Maxima sedans, as well as the theft of two motorcycles.

The first Nissan Maxima, a model year 1998 with New York license plates, was reported stolen by its 53-year-old owner in the early morning hours Thursday on the north side of Willoughby Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt avenues.

The second, a 1997 Nissan Maxima owned by a man in his 50s, was discovered missing Saturday morning from the west side of Clinton Avenue between Willoughby and Dekalb avenues in Clinton Hill—only a block-and-a-half away from the first incident.

A 1995 Honda Accord and a 1993 Jeep Cherokee were also reported stolen on Saturday.

The flurry of criminal activity came as the 88th Precinct experienced a steep year-to-year decline in the number of reported auto thefts.

For the year up to Aug. 7, 100 vehicle thefts have been reported—a decline of 68.7 percent compared to this time in 2010.

Those figures do not include the most recent incidents, however.
