MARP Calls for Improved Safety on Myrtle Avenue, Ryerson Street

The call comes after 23-year-old Antonio Wilson was shot and killed last Friday night on Myrtle and Grand avenues.

The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership has called attention to the "emerging negative environment" surrounding Myrtle Avenue and Ryerson Street, noting alleged illegal activity is contributing to deteriorating conditions in the area.

"...[W]e must collectively employ strategies to improve the atmosphere for businesses and residents alike in the immediate term," MARP wrote.

The call comes after 23-year-old Antonio Wilson was shot and killed last Friday night on Myrtle and Grand avenues. Wilson was hit in the armpit by stray gunfire that erupted after an altercation broke out near the corner in question.

MARP reached out to the 88th Precinct, which covers the area, and requested an NYPD officer and patrol car be stationed on this block Thursday through Saturday evenings. "The presence of the car should help to deter illegal activity on the sidewalk and to prevent large loitering crowds," MARP wrote.

It also asked the NYPD respond to noise complaints immediately for a period of a few weeks to demonstrate an intolerance for such behavior, dissipate crowds and discourage loitering.

The organization noted hundreds loiter on the sidewalk in this area during the time mentioned above, and most are drinking and some are fighting. "This is impacting the livelihoods of nearby merchants and is a nuisance to residents navigating the sidewalks to their homes," MARP wrote.

MARP is also crafting an action plan to target all the agencies, authorities and elected officials that can help address the situation. "We are working to organize merchants, property owners and residents to document incidents and report them through the proper channels," MARP wrote.

The organization also called on residents to work to improve the situation. Those concerned with environment can:

  • Report any suspicious activity to 311 and/or 911. "Make these calls for each and every incident you witness - it is crucial that everything is documented in order to rally the necessary resources to our community."
  • Attend the 88th Precinct Council Meeting, which takes place on the third Tuesday of each month (location varies). Contact the 88th Community Affairs line to get the location 718-636-6526.
