Illegal Barbecue Grill Blamed For High-Rise Balcony Blaze

Resident recovering from second-degree burns at hospital.

on Sunday was caused by an illegal barbecue grill, according to the building's management.

The blaze, which occurred at around 6 p.m. at , sent a resident—described by the building's manager as a man in his 30s—to the hospital with second-degree burns.

The man received burns to his right arm as he attempted to fight back the flames caused by a grill set up on the balcony outside his 16th floor co-op, according to the manager.

It is illegal in New York City to use a propane grill on the terrace or balcony of any building. The use of charcoal grills on building roofs is also prohibited.

The balcony in question is located on the top floor of the 16-story apartment building.

It was unclear what kind of grill started Sunday's fire. However, according to the building's management, use of the grill violated both city laws and the co-op's rules.

The man is expected to be released from Weill Cornell New York Hospital's Burn Unit on Tuesday, the manager said.
