The blaze started in a second floor apartment at 926 Fulton St. between Washington Avenue and St. James Place at approximately 1:14 p.m., according to one of the building's residents, Ahlam Taha, who discovered the fire shortly after visiting a neighbor in a different unit on the same floor.

"I go to my neighbor, and when I get back, five or six minutes later, I hear, 'Fire, Fire, Fire,' and I opened my door and I see it," Taha said. "I don't know what happened."

The fire spread from the second floor to the first, which houses , a Mexican restaurant .

The owner of the eatery, Clinton Hill resident Adam Frank, was at the scene and declined to be interviewed.

65 firefighters from 12 fire units responded to the blaze. The fire still had not been put out completely as of 3 p.m., according to the FDNY. No injuries were reported.

Lost in the fire were all of the possessions belonging to Taha and her husband, Abozaid-Abozaid, who wept on the sidewalk for the couple's cat, Mech-Mech, who perished in the blaze.

"He was a very smart cat, he was a good cat," he said.

The couple, who do not have children, looked for help to find a place to sleep for the night.

They joined neighbors and curious onlookers, staring at a pile of twisted metal burnt and then soaked by a steady stream of water flowing from the apartments above.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Fire officials are investigating.
