Deputy Inspector Scott Henderson Discusses Burglaries in 88th Precinct

The 88th Precinct was up 80 burglaries in 2012 compared to 2011.

At a public safety town hall meeting co-hosted with Assemblyman Walter Mosley, Councilwoman Letitia James and the Commanding Officers of the 77th and 78th Precincts Wednesday evening, the 88th Precinct's Deputy Inspector Scott Henderson spoke of conditions in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

He noted the area was up in burglaries and cautioned residents to be vigilant in securing their homes to prevent becoming a statistic.

"In the 88th Precinct, we struggled a lot with burglaries," Henderson said. "We were up 80 burglaries in 2012, as compared to 2011. If it wasn't for that, we would have been down in crime."

Henderson said that in at least two thirds of burglaries committed in the 88th Precinct, victims left their doors or windows open, or the police cannot find where the burglar entered, which usually points to an unlocked area of entry.

"Sometimes people say 'It was a warm day out, I left the window open to the fire escape,'" Henderson said.
