Deli Owner Arrested For Selling Drugs Out of Lafayette Avenue Store

Ralph Jawad, 48, was also charged with gun possession after being arrested Thursday night.

Police busted a well-known Fort Greene business owner Thursday night for allegedly selling marijuana out of his Lafayette Avenue convenience store, cops said.

Ralph Jawad, 48—called "Mayor of the Block" by many longtime Fort Greene residents—is in custody on several charges involving a stash of drugs and at least one weapon at his deli at 89 Lafayette Ave. near South Portland Ave., police said.

A nearby resident said he saw a "couple of cops" on Thursday night walking into Jawad's business—known in the neighborhood as Lafayette Ave. Meat Corp. or, just simply, Ralph's Deli.

"At that point, there did not seem to be any urgency to the situation," he said. "People were shaking hands and being friendly."

A search warrant was issued and cops arrested Jawad 7:35 p.m., according to authorities.

Jawad was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, criminial possession of a weapon, criminal possession of marijuana, intent to sell marijuana and unlawful possession of marijuana.

A longtime Fort Greene resident lingering outside the shuttered deli on Friday called Jawad "a good guy" who in her 35 years of living in the neighborhood was always ready to help someone in need.

"If there was somebody was hungry, he would feed him," she said.

we get upset over drug related crimes that happen in our neighborhood...killings, muggings, rapes, etc. but we cheer on the people who sell the drugs. i get that he has done a lot of good, but geesh. he owned his own business, he has a family, and now it's destroyed because of his poor decisions. i get that he was much loved in the community, and it's find to give words of encouragement, but it doesn't make sense to get angry at the cops or "people with political clout".

FREE RALPH! I lived in Fort Greene for many years, at one point as a broke and hungry college student. Ralph is the kind of guy that would help someone in need at the drop of a hat, no question! If there was a point where I didn't have 2 nickels to rub together, Ralph had my back with a few canned goods and beverages to put in my bare fridge... He eventually even helped me find a job. He's a stand up guy and I refuse to believe there is justice in this situation! What up Tuac!!

Ralph is an incredible human being. I could NOT have survived my New York experience without him. He fed me and my children when I needed help. He gave me money to get to the job interview for the job I have now!

Sharron Woodson Ralph has been a great friend. I know him for over 30 years from being in the neighborhhood . Always a gentle and sweet man

Ralph is a good man who has always been there for my family - and always lending a hand to people in need. Anyone who says anything different knows nothing about him - or the neighborhood they live in.
A'Mark October 24, 2012 at 07:51 PM
Lauren Wills 26 resident since 2004....what are you selling? it maybe time for you to relocate to Tribeca. Emily stay away we had enough of you! really darling, enough

Ralph is a good man who even looked out for people who stiffed him. I remember when an aquaintence of mine (an ex) stiffed him on a year worth of rent . He called me and would not accept my money when I offered to pay. He even held her belongings for six more months until everything was straightened out. A very Gracious guy. Thanks again Ralph.
Peter Nolan Smith October 25, 2012 at 12:14 AM
ralph is free. he's out of rikers and back at the store. everyone in the neighborhood is showing the love, but his troubles are not over so keep the support strong. Ralph is one of us. He's no Emily Worthington.

During the time i lived in NY, my significant other resided on So.Portland & Lafayette. We used to frequent Ralph's store for groceries, newspaper, cigarettes. Ralph was always courteous, helpful and friendly as well as polite to his customers. If Ralph could help any of the people in the community/area, he would do it without any hesitation. He is a decent human being. I am praying for him.
LadyBugMix November 22, 2012 at 01:50 PM
Ralphie is genuine so the haters had to take him down! Without people like Ralphie....the community will lose escrow. If it works...leave us alone dammit...

There would be no marijuana related crime if it were not for the unfortunate face that it is illegal. It is an absolute shame that we allow such things to happen by absurdly criminalizing a harmless plant. It is also a waste of taxpayer dollars to allocate law enforcement resources toward fighting it, whereas it could be, and obviously should, be legal. And taxed.

Any idea what happened? I see that the deli was shuttered last week.
Waverly Wonder March 21, 2013 at 02:35 AM
Guy is a menace to society. Too bad that an immigrant to this country chooses to repay his welcome by selling drugs from his store. He could have easily transformed this store into a legitimate business.
