Cops Cracking Down On Cyclists

The 88th Precinct plans outreach and summonses to improve two-wheeled conduct.

Cops in Fort Greene in Clinton Hill are planning to crack down on cycling scofflaws, and are focussing on local food delivery businesses in an effort to prevent flouting of traffic laws.

Everyday sights such as bicyclists running red lights and stop signs, and riding on the sidewalk will now likely be met with a summons from a police officer from the 88th Precinct.

But the 88th is also planning a concerted outreach effort to improve cycling behavior without having to issue a summons, and are focusing on restaurants that employ deliverymen on bicycles.

"You hate to give someone a $110 summons when you know they can't afford it," said a source at the 88th involved in the outreach effort.

The operation will involve cops canvassing the neighbhorhood with information related to the NYPD's citywide "Operation Safe Cycle." Essentially, the flyers and pamphlets will remind cyclists that they are to obey the same laws as cars.

"The cyclists blame the motorists, the motorists blame the cyclists — but enforcement has to be even," said the police source.

Some cycling advocates were OK with the move, provided the attention did not mean less enforcement directed at drivers.

"It’s important the NYPD focus on the most dangerous street behaviors, whether it be speeding cars, or cyclists crossing a red light," said Caroline Samponaro, a spokeswoman for Transportation Alternatives, a group that champions cycling.

Other cyclists couldn't help but point the finger at their constant adversary: cars.

"I understand, but there needs to be a push for bike awareness," said Carroll Gardens resident Monica McMahon. "Cars need to be more considerate!"

The crackdown was first reported by The Brooklyn Paper.
