Burglars Target Lafayette Ave. Brownstones: This Week's Police Blotter

Burglary

  • A residence at on Lafayette Avenue near Adelphi Street was robbed while a couple slept in the early morning hours of July 3. The robber gained entry through a first floor window screen and took a checkbook, book bag, wallet and an unknown amount of cash. A runner later found property belonging to the victims on Greene Avenue.
  • A resident of an apartment a few doors down on Lafayette Avenue told police that an unknown person opened his living room window and reached in to grab a wallet sometime during the early morning hours of July 3.  The victim found numerous IDs scattered outside on the street.
  • Sometime during the night and early morning of July 4-5, an unknown perp entered a woman’s apartment on Clermont Avenue between Flushing and Park avenues and stole $6,000 worth of goods including a laptop, credit cards and checks.
  • Two men were arrested for trying to break into a residence on Clermont Avenue between Lafayette and Dekalb avenues on July 7 at around 5 a.m.  The men, age 20 and 18, were caught after a witness observed them climbing up the building to get into an upstairs window. Officers later found the men hanging out on a stoop at the building next door.
  • A young man and woman were arrested for breaking into the rear of a residence on Cambridge Place on July 5 at around 5:18 p.m.

Larceny

  • An unknown perp(s) snatched a woman’s purse at Chuck E Cheese at Atlantic Terminal Mall on July 2 at around 10:30 p.m. 
  • A credit card scammer went on a $5,000 shopping spree before getting busted by police at the Fulton Mall Macy’s on July 3. The fraudster had a fake New Jersey ID to match the card and made purchases at Macy’s and Target. 
  • A woman discovered her wallet stolen from the counter of a takeout Chinese restaurant at Myrtle and Carlton avenues on July 5 at around 2:45 p.m.
  • While walking on Dekalb Avenue on July 7 at 11 a.m., a 35-year-old woman’s iPhone 4S was snatched from her hand by a perp approaching her from behind.

  • A woman leaving her purse in a shopping cart at Target discovered it missing on July 3 at 5:40 p.m. A check of store security didn’t turn up any clues.
  • Target loss prevention officers caught a 28-year-old woman shoplifting from the store on July 4 at 7:30 p.m.
  • A locked $2,800 Scott bike was stolen outside Brooklyn Academy of Music on St. Felix St on July 5 at around noon while its owner ran inside to get his paycheck.

Robbery

  • Twelve males surrounded a 16-year-old playing basketball at the courts at Fort Greene Park and robbed him of a pair of Armani Exchange sunglasses, PS3 and Samsung mobile phone on July 6 at around 5:45 p.m.
  • An armed man ended up empty-handed after a failed heist at a bodega at 541 Myrtle Ave. on July 6 at 12:30 a.m. Upon entering the businesses and flashing a silver handgun in his waistband, the bodega owner emptied his pockets and said he had no money. The would-be robber then left the bodega and started walking westbound on Myrtle Avenue.

Assault

  • The 26-year-old aunt of a teenage girl struck her in the face and fractured her nose with an iron at a residence on Grand Avenue on July 6 at 6 p.m. The girl, 16, was treated at Brooklyn Hospital.
  • On the street in the vicinity of 29 Putnam Ave., a perp slashed a 49-year-old man with a piece of metal causing a cut to his temple on July 3 at 9:30 p.m. After the incident, the perp went to the 88th Precinct stationhouse on Classon Avenue alleging that it was the victim that tried to rob him and beat him up.
  • The father of a 9-year-old girl became enraged upon finding out on July 4 that his daughter was not at an Adelphi Street residence ready to be picked up. The man, 43, then grabbed a 32-year-old woman around the neck and began to choke her. A third person had to pull the man off the woman, who received visible injuries as a result of the attack.
