UFT ENDORSES LAURIE CUMBO FOR 35TH CITY COUNCIL DISTRICT

(BROOKLYN, NY) Today, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which represents more than 200,000 men and women in New York, announced their support for Laurie Cumbo Democratic Candidate for the 35th District City Council seat. UFT President Michael Mulgrew cited Cumbo’s recognition that there is no better investment in our city’s future than the investments we make in education.

“Giving our children every possible resource to thrive is what grows our communities,” Laurie Cumbo, 35th City Council District Candidate said. “I am overwhelmed by the support of the UFT today. They have always fought tirelessly to protect our educators who are an integral part of building our children’s future. I know that the changes we make to our schools now will determine the state of our city tomorrow. My choice to run for City Council was made with the goal of bringing resources back to the District and I have focused on education as a way to grow our community long term. I am excited to collaborate with the UFT on new ideas for our schools and teachers and work with them on my campaign this summer.”

“Laurie Cumbo knows firsthand what our schools need to thrive and she is the best candidate in the 35th to do just that,” Michael Mulgrew, UFT President said. “We look forward to working with Laurie on her campaign and in the City Council."   The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) represents more than 200,000 active and retired teachers, classroom paraprofessionals, school secretaries, attendance teachers, guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers and speech therapists. The UFT is part of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

Cumbo is far outpacing her rivals in major endorsements including: 1199 SEIU, the Working Families Party, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, SEIU 32BJ, Hotel and Motel Trades Council and the Steamfitters Local Union 638.
