Clarke Praises Cumbo’s Commitment to Equality and Economic Development 

(BROOKLYN, NY) – Sunday, August 18, 2013, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, who has represented New York’s 9th Congressional District since 2007, officially endorsed Laurie Cumbo, 35th District City Council candidate. Congresswoman Clarke’s endorsement follows that of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries Saturday, as well as an unbroken string of union endorsements over the past three months.

“Congresswoman Clarke has truly demonstrated what it means to be a loyal community activist and defender of equal rights,” Laurie Cumbo, 35th District City Council Candidate said. “I am sincerely honored to have her support, as she is a fearless representative who has worked tirelessly to transform Brooklyn. She has secured millions in federal funds to support local institutions that invigorate our community and attract families, tourism and investment, such as the Brooklyn Children’s Museum where I have worked myself. I am looking forward to working with Congresswoman Clarke to further develop our community and its surrounding neighborhoods.”

United States Representative Yvette D. Clarke is a Brooklyn native whose roots are firmly planted in her Jamaican heritage. A product of the New York City Public School System, Rep. Clarke graduated from Oberlin College and was a recipient of the prestigious APPAM/Sloan Fellowship in Public Policy and Policy Analysis. Prior to being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, Rep. Clarke served on the New York City Council representing the 40th District in Brooklyn. She succeeded her pioneering mother, former City Council Member Una S. T. Clarke, making them the first mother-daughter succession in the history of the Council. As an activist, a community organizer and now as a legislator, Rep. Clarke’s boldness, compassion and love for humanity has allowed her to become an effective leader and an outspoken advocate on numerous issues of great importance to her constituents. Currently in the 113th Congress, Rep. Clarke sits on the Committees of Homeland Security, Ethics, and Small Business.  

Cumbo is far outpacing her rivals in major endorsements including: New York League of Conservation Voters, Doctors Council SEIU, NYCLASS, Progressive Alliance for Political Action, Parliament Democratic Club, Transit Workers Union, United Federation of Teachers, 1199 SEIU, the Working Families Party, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, SEIU 32BJ, Hotel and Motel Trades Council and the Steamfitters Local Union 638.
