(BROOKLYN, NY) – Saturday, August 17, 2013, U.S. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and New York State Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley, announced their support of Laurie Cumbo, 35th District City Council Candidate. Cumbo continues to build support in her bid to become the next City Councilmember of the 35th District, which includes Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, and parts of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Bedford Stuyvesant.

Laurie will be a tireless advocate for economic justice and our quality of life, and that's why I proudly endorse her candidacy for City Council.”

Mosley is a dedicated public servant who has fought for the fair treatment of the diverse families in his community,” Laurie Cumbo, 35th District City Council Candidate said. “In his first career vote as a state legislator, he helped pass the NY SAFE Act, which has been a crucial protection against gun violence in our neighborhoods. I am honored to have the Assemblyman’s support, and I look forward to working with him to continue our efforts to expand affordable housing, protect the rights of seniors, and provide immigrant communities with the tools they need to achieve the American Dream.” 

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries represents New York’s Eighth Congressional District. Prior to his election to the Congress, Congressman Jeffries served for six years in the New York State Assembly. In that capacity, he authored laws that included protecting the civil liberties of law-abiding New Yorkers during police encounters, encouraging the transformation of vacant luxury condominiums into affordable homes for working families, and improving the quality of justice in the civil court system. In the 113th Congress, he is working on economic growth, reforming the criminal justice system, preventing gun violence and assisting neighborhoods in the District that were devastated by Super Storm Sandy.

Walter T. Mosley was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2012, and he represents District 57, which comprises the neighborhoods of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, and parts of Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant. He has introduced legislation to fight public employer discrimination of formerly incarcerated individuals, provide legal representation for persons facing foreclosure proceedings, and require mortgage lenders and brokers to inform potential homeowners of their Mortgage Bill of Rights. He also continues to advocate for key progressive reforms such as increasing the minimum wage and the NYS DREAM Act.

Cumbo is far outpacing her rivals in major endorsements including: New York League of Conservation Voters, Doctors Council SEIU, NYCLASS, Progressive Alliance for Political Action, Parliament Democratic Club, Transit Workers Union, United Federation of Teachers, 1199 SEIU, the Working Families Party, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, SEIU 32BJ, Hotel and Motel Trades Council and the Steamfitters Local Union 638.
