The Department of Homeless Services has ended Advantage, the only remaining voucher program available to NYC shelter residents who are ineligible for supportive housing. DHS ended the program rapidly and carelessly, leaving thousands of shelter residents without an option to exit the system.

The Bloomberg administration is playing politics with the lives of the City’s homeless, and placing all the blame on the State. Simultaneously, Governor Cuomo has sought to balance the budget on the backs of poor and working class people.  Cuomo says the City has the money to pay for the Advantage program if it wants to.

Both Bloomberg and Cuomo have one thing in common in this budget season: they both prioritize the wealthiest at the expense of low-income people.

NYC has no plan for permanently housing the currently homeless. DHS says that ending Advantage will lead to tens of millions in costs for new shelters, but what about re-prioritizing homeless people into federally funded vouchers and and public housing units? What about spending for permanent housing for homeless people instead of shelters and time-limited programs like the failed Advantage program?

The City's advice to shelter residents during all of this? Sit back and wait. Save your money. Figure out something else.

THEY SAY SIT BACK?

WE SAY FIGHT BACK.
