Fort Greene Greenmarket Harvest Fest was a Blast!

Last Saturday was PACKED with Harvest-Halloween fun!

~It was truly great to see some new faces.  I met a lot of people that hadn't come through the market before and were excited to find how beautiful and fun it can be.

  • Fort Greene Park Greenmarket had a Donut-Eating-Contest in which Emily from Wilklow Orchards schooled our contestants!
  • We also had a pumpkin painting station for those that snagged a pumpkin at the park's transplanted pumpkin patch thanks to Rexcroft Farms.
  • Roisin Ford from Myrtle Eats Fresh cooked up a tasty "Autumn Medley" featuring Winesap Apples, Apple cider, Cippolini Onions, Colorful Potatoes, Garlic, and Yellow Onions
The park and the market was filled with dog costumes (for the annual PUPkin contest) hot apple cider, a hayride, face painting, music, food, and most importantly - farm fresh delights from our 19 producers in attendance.

Our producers come down miles and miles away from their farms to provide Fort Greene with the freshest bounty one can find in these parts. Yes, CSAs are wonderful programs and the co-ops subsidize a lot of the products you can't get at the farmers markets, but nowhere else can you get the same sense of a fusion community between the city folk and the farmers/producers from 60-300 miles away that know how to talk about the harvest, where managers and farmers together can provide concise recipe ideas, nutrition facts, and all happenings in the ever-changing food world we're living in right now.

Stop by for a crunchy apple, a hot cider, a muffin, a carrot - anything to start your weekend off right every Saturday, all year round :)

Happy Halloween! See you at the market!
