BCS Million Step Challenge: Going the Distance for Better Brooklyn

Brooklyn Community Services is excited to announce the launch of the BCS Million Step Challenge: Going the Distance for a Better Brooklyn, a one-mile walk in beautiful Prospect Park, starting at noon on Sunday, September 22nd.  This special event builds awareness for the important work of BCS as 500 supporters each walk one mile (2,000 steps) to raise money through pledges.  The event’s goal, collectively, is to reach 1,000,000 steps as the 500 participants come together and “go the distance” for a better Brooklyn.

Anyone interested in participating in the BCS Million Step Challenge can choose to register individually or they can create or join a team.  Registration is only $10.  Also back by popular demand, the Most Philanthropic Dog of Brooklyn contest will award the top earning canine and owner team a gift certificate from one of Brooklyn’s local pet friendly establishments.  Owners and their pets can add their steps to the challenge together by registering for only $15.  Top prizes and honors will also be awarded to all those walkers or teams who raise at least $2,000 or $1.00 for every step.

More about the BCS Million Step Challenge: 

Conceived seven years ago by a group of adults living with disabilities who were clients of BCS as a way to raise money for community activities, this event – previously called FunWalk – has grown into one of BCS’s most cherished and fun-filled events.  Renamed this year as the BCS Million Step Challenge, the event’s organizers now aim to build on the growing popularity of the walk and make a greater difference in the lives of people living in Brooklyn.  “Last year, we had a great team, but this year we want more people on the team and more sponsors to reach our goal,” said Stefanie Cordero, BCS client and seven year veteran of BCS walks. 

The Million Step Challenge brings together the people BCS serves, along with the organization’s Board of Directors, staff, Junior Board, donors, volunteers and supporters, to help spread the word about the vital work of BCS.  All proceeds raised from the walk benefit BCS programs that help young people thrive through early childhood and child and youth education, keep families together through counseling and case management, and provide job training and placement assistance, mental

health and wellness programs and many other services for adults with disabilities.

BCS is also proud to announce Optimum as the media sponsor for the event.  This partnership will help BCS further promote the Million Step Challenge and build awareness for one of Brooklyn’s oldest social service organizations. 

Grammy nominated Progressive/Soul/R&B recording artist and BCS Ambassador, Maiysha, will host the Million Step Challenge.  “I am so excited to be adding my steps to the BCS Million Step Challenge and helping raise awareness for BCS.  Brooklyn is better when all Brooklynites have the opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to the community.  BCS is making that possible,” said Maiysha.  She will

join a number of other special guests for food, fun and entertainment during 

the all-day event.
