Who Should Pay To Keep Whitman Houses Kids Off the Streets?

Community center infested with rats, roaches and what many term a regrettable lack of funding.

These days it's either the basketball courts, hanging out on the streets or, literally, nothing.

For the young people of Whitman Houses, the continued closure of the housing project's community center has now become just another fact of life—much like the high unemployment that plagues the area and persistent bouts of deadly gun violence.

held in honor of the victims of that latest burst of gunfire, Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Fort Greene, told Patch that negotiations with two private developers were underway in order to locate the money needed to reopen the center.

However, James admitted that it would take a consistent form of revenue to keep Whitman Houses Community Center open.

With the center currently infested with roaches and rats, according to 50th District Leader Lincoln Restler, it's certainly going to take a considerable amount of green to rehabilitate the facility.
