Whiz Kid of the Week: Zari Havercome

Name: Zari Havercome

Age: 17 years old

School: St. Joseph High School

Accomplishments: Havercome’s wide-ranging achievements include junior class president, school newspaper editor, relationship abuse prevention peer leader, tutor, and teacher's assistant. At just 17, she already boasts an impressive academic record including an A average, and completed high school math and science in just two years! And just to round it out, she is also a step team member and has danced at the Apollo Theater.

Key to Awesomeness: Havercome’s mother, Alison, said that it’s not just how hard her daughter works; she is very self-motivated, too. “ I push myself until I am satisfied with my work." said Havercome. "I don't try to meet anyone else's expectations for me. I make my own. I push myself to be the best me I can be."

What's more, Havercome recognizes not only the importance of hard work, but the satisfaction and joy that come as a result of it. "I do everything that makes me happy. No one should be more proud of me than myself. I take every opportunity that helps to guarantee a great future.”

Her mother also cited Havercome’s willingness to try new things. “She is very adventurous, and loves to travel and experience new cultures and cuisines,” said Alison Havercome. “She is an all around great kid.” We are inclined to agree.
