The Week That Was in Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill

Here's our summary of what went down last week in the neighborhood.

Is there ever a quiet week in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill? Not when your local Patch is on the prowl. Here’s what popped off in the last seven days.

Monday began with our story about a local political player’s push to have a block of Putnam Avenue renamed “Collymore Court” in honor of her father. Renee Collymore’s plan faced a tough line of questioning at a Community Board 2 meeting last week, but she still has a chance to persuade the board in the coming months.

The next day, our real estate columnist reported in Greenelisted on a condo that just hit the market in a former brothel on Washington Avenue. Sounds like a great conversation-starter. That same day, we also featured a stylish video on Officer Chris Yip, the piano playing policeman. Yip gave a piano recital at the Brooklyn Music School to raise funds for the Chinese-American Planning Council.

By pure coincidence, we returned on Wednesday to the same block of Putnam Avenue that may one day be renamed. This summer, the block, along with three other triangular parks along Fulton Street will be renovated to make them more pedestrian-friendly.

Thursday brought the latest news on 29 Flatbush, a new 42-story development that has some locals and politicians concerned about its potential impact on Fort Greene. Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Fort Greene, has even hinted at the possibility of a lawsuit against the project.

The week closed with our drinking columnist’s best column yet — we think — about the Emerson. The Secret Sipper said that the Emerson was OK, but that it’s no place for a lonely soul on Valentine’s Day. (But then again, what place is good for a lonely soul on V-Day?)

Friday brought big news about Moe’s, one of the better bars in the neighborhood, in our humble opinion. For several months, barflies worried that the watering hole would close at the end of February because its lease was up. But the landlord granted the bar a two-month reprieve as they continue negotiations over the new rent. The kegs haven’t run dry just yet.
