The Week That Was in Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill

Our weekly roundup of big stories on our brand new website.

It was another busy week in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

On Monday our reporter Claire Glass reported that residents of one block on DeKalb Avenue were abuzz with criticism of the thoroughfare, which they said was becoming increasingly dangerous because of speeding drivers’ disregard for the bike lane.  Statistics showed that several pedestrians and cyclists had been hit by cars around the block, and some commenters called for a Stop Sign.

On Tuesday we began our month-long series in honor of Black History Month. Our first piece was by the former chair of the Fort Greene Association, Howard Pitsch. He reflected on the accomplishments of the group’s founder, Herbert Scott-Gibson, who was instrumental in establishing the Fort Greene Historic District.  Keep an eye on our series through the rest of the month.

On Wednesday our new parenting columnist John Rouse struck a chord with local residents with his first article about affordable things to do with his 4-month-old baby boy. It’s our most popular column to date; be sure to check back next Wednesday for John’s next article.

Thursday brought a report on the upcoming Myrtle Avenue pedestrian plaza between Grand Avenue and Emerson Place. Locals hailed the spirit of the project, which is to make the street more pedestrian friendly, but offered several criticisms of the current design. Designers of the plaza will continue refining the design with locals’ suggestions in mind.

And late on Friday police confirmed what many already suspected: that the same man is likely responsible for the two sexual assaults near BAM in the past two weeks. But cops also had a surprise: the suspect is possibly the culprit in another late night attack on a woman in Dyker Heights. Cops also released a surveillance video of the suspect.
