The Kids Are Allright: Inaugural Edition

Where to bring the youngsters this weekend.

Ed. note: Our regular kids event columnist, , is currently awaiting the newest addition to her family (which could be happening anytime now...). In the meantime, Fort Greene-Clinton Hill local editor Paul Leonard—proud uncle of Natalia (a rambunctious age 2) and Elliott (a model train-obsessed age 6) of Phoenix, Ariz.—will be keeping readers informed about the comings and goings in kid-friendly event-world. So let the educational, yet entertaining, fun begin!

1. Kids Corner, , 757 Fulton St., btwn. S. Portland and S. Oxford.  We've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: Habana Outpost is one of our favorite places to spend a weekend afternoon. And with summer almost gone (and seasonal Habana's year also drawing to a close), this is the time to take the kids outdoors for some good ol' fashioned edu-tainment while you enjoy some corn and cuban. Sat., Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.

2. at Greenlight Bookstore, 686 Fulton St., btwn. S. Elliiott and S. Portland. It's scientifically proven (O.K., maybe just anecdotally obvious) that reading to your kids makes them 2.5 times more likely to become journalists, which we can all agree is the noblest profession there is. So come on down to Greenlight this Saturday and try to slip some Sartre in with the Thomas the Tank Engine. Sat., Sept. 17 at 11 a.m.

3. , Jive Turkey, 570 Myrtle Ave., btwn. Emerson and Classon. The worst thing you can do with a finicky child, they say, is to indulge him/her in their strange tastes. But as a fully-grown lover of Peanut Butter and Rice Krispies sandwiches (with optional salt), I say let your youngster's culinary freak flag fly. This weekend, a Cajun twist on Turkey Day is on the menu. All day, Sat., Sept. 17.

4. Not the Brooklyn Childrens Museum, 145 Brooklyn Ave., btwn St. Marks and Prospect Place. O.K., this list is going to be 99.9 percent about what's actually going on around the neighborhood. However, we thought that it would be the worst Saturday afternoon ever if you packed the kiddies in the stroller for a fun trip to the Brooklyn Children's Museum, only to find out that this truly awesome kid-friendly hotspot was closed for maintenance until Sept. 27. Reopens Wed., Sept. 28, normal hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tues.-Sun. Closed Monday.

5. , Grand Army Plaza. Why have the kids chase after an ice cream truck when you can walk down to Grand Army and meet a whole flotilla of purveyors of frozen treats? Though we stopped reading the list at Cupcake Shop (it's early and we're a little bit low blood sugar), there are surely tons more chocolate-covered somethings on tap at this event held on the third Sunday of every month, courtesy of the NYC Food Truck Association. Sun., Sept. 18, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
