The Bargain Hunter! 5 Deals for V-Day

Our parenting columnist gives the rundown on five good buys for a family with a little one in tow.

I am one week into life as a stay at home dad and it has been filled with many ups and downs. John Carlito’s Mom has gone back to work and I’m not sure who cried more this week: John Carlito or his Mom. After a tough first day back in the office, she was not amused by the Wiffle ball I hung from the chandelier to facilitate the development of my son’s devastating Ripken-esque batting stance.

Following his Mom’s lead, John Carlito did not seem particularly thrilled when I forgot the lyrics to Old MacDonald and ended up singing an off-key mashup lullaby with B-I-N-G-O. “Old MacDonald had a dog and BINGO was his name-o…”

Needless to say, after the rough start to this big transition there will be a special emphasis placed on Valentine’s Day this year. So with no further ado here are my top five Valentine’s Day gift ideas in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill under consideration by this frugal family.

5.  Dinner & Movie at BAM or Chez Oskar —  is offering a Valentine’s Day dinner and a movie package. Unfortunately, babysitters are at a premium on V-Day, so the family may be heading to to enjoy the $38 Prix Fixe. Chicken Pot Pie for Valentine’s Day anyone?

4.  A watch from on DeKalb Avenue — One year I got Amy a ring with a giant pink skull and crossbones on it. I’m hoping the second-hand watch I have my eye on doesn’t take the title of “Worst Present Ever” from the skull and crossbones ring. But, if Amy doesn’t like it we may have found John Carlito’s baptism present.

3.  Dope Jams — I am considering purchasing an Al Green album from my favorite neighborhood record store on Myrtle Avenue. Does anything say “ I Love You” more than Al Green on vinyl?

2. Cupcakes for my cupcake — Cake Joy is a new cupcake place on Myrtle Avenue between Clermont Avenue and Adelphi Street that is offering a red velvet cupcake special for Valentine’s day. So, if all else fails I will attempt to stuff my wonderful wife with cupcakes until a smile breaks out from under the creamy frosting remnants.

1. Cynergy Spa — This spa on Fort Greene Place is offering a “Valentine’s for Two” special that includes champagne and a rose petal bath. But, with my stay at home dad skills kicking in Amy might find that this is very similar to the treatment she is already receiving at home.
